Dirk Burkhardt holds a diploma in Computer Science from the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Görlitz. In line with his diploma thesis he developed an intelligent system for gesture recognition to support the intuitive interaction with information systems.

Mr. Burkhardt works since 2008 as researcher at the Fraunhofer IGD and was involved in various national and European projects, where he developed systems for knowledge representation and visualization. In 2009 he became responsible for the tasks Semantic-Editing and Semantic-Annotation in the THESEUS CTC core-technology project Innovative User Interfaces and Visualizations. Further he overtook the responsibility for the European RURALeNTER project, which investigated e-learning concepts for capacity building in rural areas. He is currently the deputy of the work package for advanced visualization in the European large Scale IP-project FUPOL.

His research interests are focused on concepts and technologies for process-oriented visualization for the semantic web and policy modeling. In addition he also investigates gesture-based multimodal interactions.
